This is a MacVoices Briefing on the Anker SoundCore Sport Bluetooth Speaker, which has become my new favorite shower speaker.
Why a shower speaker? Because when you want to listen to music or podcasts in the shower, having a speaker in the bathroom isn’t good enough. You need something that is right there beside you to overcome the hiss of the water and the sound dampening effect of shower curtains or walls. My previous shower speaker pick accomplished this quite well, but the Anker is even better.
Of course, the measure of a speaker is always how it sounds. The Anker SoundCore Sport isn’t going to give you big sound or deep bass, but it does have a passive subwoofer which improves the sound over other speakers of its size.
It delivers clear, crisp sound, and plenty of volume, which is rated at 3 watts You could easily use it in a hotel room as a travel speaker if you weren’t too picky about sound quality. It’s not going to rock the guests in the next room, but you won’t have any trouble hearing it.
The Speaker Itself
The Anker Soundcore Sport comes in the standard Anker flat black and is a compressed cube measuring 3.35 x 3.35 by 1.77 inches, and weighs in at 8.1 ounces. There is a strap included that you can use to hang the SoundCore Sport, but my shower didn’t have a convenient location, so a quick stop at a local hardware store for a plastic S-hook took care of that. In fact, it is ideal, because the speaker hangs at just above ear-level. The compact, solid, practical size and shapealso gives you the option of putting it on a shower shelf or ledge with no chance of it falling off unless you were to bump it.
You could always hang it over the shower nozel if necessary, because it is IPX7 rated, meaning it can be immersed in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. That’s never going to happen in my shower…I hope.
The Bluetooth pairing is simple and fast, and the connectivity range is advertised at 33 feet. While I haven’t measured it out, I can hold the connection while the speaker is in the shower and I am close to the other side of my house, farther than some other speakers I’ve used.
Interesting to note is that there is a microphone included in the speaker, so you can take calls in the shower. You will have no trouble hearing the caller, but he or she may complain of the unavoidable water noise and echo that has everything to do with your environment and nothing to do with the speaker.
Controls and Alerts
There are a series of debossed control buttons on the top for volume up and down, power, and Bluetooth connectivity.
On the side an attached rubber plug pulls out to reveal a micro-USB port and headphone jack. The plug has a ridge on it that makes it easy to open, but seals the access area tight so no water gets in.
The Anker Soundcore sport powers up with a series of four distinct chime sounds, and a small blue LED appears behind the speaker grill, and stays lit during use. When the speaker is starting to get low on power, there are more chimes to alert you, and the blue blinks blue and red. The warning can be a bit insistent to be sure you know what’s happening, but there is usually plenty of time to finish your shower before being left without music.
There is a separate set of chimes for an incoming call, and the music mutes when the chimes sound. Again, no confusion about what you’re being alerted to.
The Anker Soundcore Sport is advertised as having 10 hours of playing time on a single charge, subject to volume level and what is being played. I’m a fan of real-world use cases and not advertised numbers, and have found that I can go for at least 12 to 14 days of daily morning use without needing to plug it in.
The Bottom Line
As I said , the Anker SoundCore Sport is my new favorite shower speaker, but it obviously has many other uses. Anywhere that you want decent sound and don’t require booming volume is perfect for this little waterproof and dust resistant speaker. The long battery life means it will be good for a day at the beach or pool with power left over for the party that night.
The Anker SoundCore Sport retails for $59.99, but is available at a street price of about $26 on Amazon. For the street price, it is a terrific investment.
